The Lord Of the Rings himself - Howard Shore!

Today I got to hear from and meet one of my all-time favorite film composers. As part of the NYU Film Scoring program, each semester they bring in people in the industry to talk about their work and to give advice. This semester, the “big name” person they brought in was none other than famed Lord Of the Rings composer Howard Shore! While Shore may be best known for his scores for The Lord Of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, he has composed music for other notable films such as Silence of the Lambs and Ed Wood, as well as for the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.

Shore showed clips from the different movies and talked about his process and his mindset, in addition to some very interesting info on the projects themselves (such as how doing all the music for Lord Of the Rings consumed 4 years of his life!). The thing that I appreciated the most though, was that whenever someone asked a question (including myself), he didn’t just give a 1 or 2 sentence answer, he elaborated and explained in-depth and seemed very passionate about his work, which made the whole experience all the more rewarding. Shore was also very kind and patient to all of us after the talk and let people come up, shake his hand, and take pictures with him. This is one Facebook profile picture I won’t be getting rid of for awhile!
